Last night I was so, so lucky to get to photograph John Grant at the Olympia in Dublin. It was touch and go as to whether I’d get to shoot it at as there was a mixup on my part with the photo pass but Claire at MCD and Noelle at the Olympia worked their magic and managed to get me in just as John took to the stage. Massive relief as I’d have been gutted to miss this man in concert and after seeing him play what a show I’d have missed out on. He is an absolute master. Incredible voice, amazing stage presence, incredibly humble, funny, a terrific story teller and what a preformer. The sound was unreal. It would go through you and while doing so shake every organ in your body. As if the man himself isn’t enough he was joined on stage at several points throughout the evening by Sinead O’Connor and Conor O’Brien from Villagers and you can imagine the crowd went absolutely nuts. What an amazing atmosphere and the crowd at the Olympia gave them an amazing reception. Goosebumps thinking back on it all.
I recoreded a couple of couple of clips on my iphone but I was so close to the speakers that it’s not really the best recording in the world and the bass heavy songs like Pale Green Ghosts were impossible to try and record so I opted to record a couple of the more mellow covers that he did. One was a cover of Abba’s Angel Eyes with Conor O’Brien which takes that song to a whole new level and the next was Patsy Cline’s I Fall to Pieces including the back story of how he came to sing this song. Enjoy folks and massive thank you again to The Olympia and MCD for this opportunity!
